Ever heard the term “sweet Fanny Adams”? It’s come to mean a host of things, including “Yeah, I’m just gonna bullshit this…”. Readers of Terry Pratchett have surely come across it once or twice. Originally, it was the name given by British sailors in the Royal Navy to the canned meat they received in their rations. But where did it come from?

Fanny Adams was an 8-year-old girl. On a warm summer’s day in 1867, she was murdered and partially dismembered in a field in Hampshire.
