There are only two countries that have child poverty rates over 20%: Romania and the United States.

If your daddy paid your way through Harvard, I think you have a special obligation to help poor and middle class kids get a higher education.

We can’t escape responsibility, there’s no sitting out moral decisions, and whenever we refuse to stand up against wrongdoing we’re actually supporting the status quo.
Former Salt Lake City mayor and current U.S. Presidential candidate Rocky Anderson

Worried about Internet censorship? Want to stop illegal piracy but think forcibly shutting down massive websites (like Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, and YouTube) based on an individual user’s content is a bad idea? Think that it’s a bad idea to give our government complete control over which websites you can visit? Think the way China and Iran censor their citizens’ access to the Internet is at best mis-guided?

Then chances are you’re against the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA), two bills currently on their way to being passed by the US government. Want to help stop them? Then let your representatives know. Follow the link above and enter your zipcode to get contact information. Call and e-mail them for quick and maximum impact.

Writing or calling your reps but don’t know what to say? There’s plenty of places online to get a pre-written message you can copy/paste or recite when you reach voicemail. In fact, here’s one right now:

” I am writing to you today about the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). While stopping Internet piracy and protecting the intellectual and creative property of artists in any medium are both noble goals, these bills are inherently flawed. They create a situation in which companies are responsible for policing the speech of individuals. The ambiguous and overbroad language of the bills will open the door to censorship of free speech by any individual or collective entity. What is perhaps most important, however, is that both bills will effectively allow the government to shut down entire websites. This is the type of censorship we see in countries like China or Iran. I firmly believe that such censorship goes against the fundamental values of the United States, and thus has no place in our country. Stopping piracy is important, but neither of these bills are the way to do it. I urge you to please take a stand against censorship, and vote against both SOPA & PIPA. Thank you.”

My father got sick when I was 22… and I was poor. And my father had an ulcer, and it exploded, and, you know, all these toxins get in your blood - and basically, my father died 50 days after his ulcer. So I had a father get sick while I was poor.

My mother got sick while I was rich. I don’t really wanna get into to it, but my mother was sicker than my father, okay? And my mother’s alive. My mother’s fine, okay?

I remember going to the hospital to see my mother and wondering, was I in the right place? Like, this is a hotel! Like, it had a concierge, man! …If the average person really knew the discrepancy in the healthcare system, there’d be riots in the streets, okay? They would burn this motherfucker down.

^ My point. That I’m trying to make. Is this.

If life is a fundamental right of any citizen of our country, than health must also be a fundamental right—at the very least, a certain level of health. We can discuss what that level is, but at some point, there is some measurable level of health without which a person can’t live.

No one should die because they can’t afford to receive a treatment that, if they were rich, they could receive.

I’m sayin’.

1. Does anyone know where this is from? I’d like to link it, if possible.

2. This ought to be disturbing, even—or especially—as a pacifist. Though I may not agree with war, or even handing a standing offensive army, I do agree that all of our veterans deserve the following: healthcare including psychiatric and psychological care, housing, family counseling, job training, and most importantly, free education.

Bert Jacobs pointed out to us in our Death and Dying class that the only time in recent history that this country has taken proper care of its vets was after WWII, when systems were put in place to give these 18-, 19-, 20-year-old kids the opportunity to receive a free college education. And look where that took us. Look how it got us through. The greatest generation? Yeah, but not because they fought for us. Because we fought for them, too.

It’s time to start fighting for our veterans again.
